TenPlusTwenty.pdf is a free PDF file that contains thirty reading lessons with worksheets for ESL students at the intermediate and advanced reading levels. The lessons are written as stories in informal American English. Selected vocabulary words, common idioms and slang expressions are highlighted in bold print. Each story occupies a single page in the file and can be printed separately from all the others. A one-page worksheet follows each story. To conserve paper and minimize expenses, each worksheet may be printed on the reverse side of its printed story by simply flipping the paper over for the second printing. The number of copies will depend, of course, upon the size of the class.

Suggestions for Use: The lessons are designed to increase the students’ vocabularies and reading comprehension by teaching new words in context rather than by rote memory. The stories may be read aloud and discussed in class, with particular attention given to the highlighted words and phrases. The students may then fill out the worksheets and compare answers. Students should be encouraged to read the stories again and again at home, and to commit to memory as much of the vocabulary as possible. Although designed principally for reading classes, the stories may also be used as a springboard for conversation and writing courses.
